Saving Wolfdogs, One Rescue at a Time
At Black Moon Wolfdog Sanctuary, we provide a safe haven for wolfdogs who have been red-tagged, listed for euthanasia, or urgently need rescue. Our mission is to rehabilitate and care for these misunderstood animals, offering them the second chance they deserve.
Our Purpose
We believe every wolfdog deserves the chance to live free from fear, neglect, and abuse. Black Moon Wolfdog Sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and advocating for wolfdogs who would otherwise face uncertain or tragic fates. Our purpose goes beyond just saving lives—it's about restoring dignity and honor to these majestic animals.
We are committed to holistic, trauma-informed care, drawing from the deep bond between humans and animals to help these incredible creatures heal. Your support helps us create a world where wolfdogs are seen, valued, and protected.
Our Story
Born from a personal journey of healing and resilience, Black Moon Wolfdog Sanctuary began as a vision for providing refuge for animals who, like their human counterparts, have experienced colonial trauma. After years of CPTSD recovery, our founder Metztli felt called to give back by rescuing wolfdogs facing euthanasia or neglect.
Today, the sanctuary is home to 10 wolfdogs and counting, all of whom have their own unique stories of survival. What began as a mission to heal ourselves has expanded into a community-driven movement to save the lives of these incredible animals and change cultural narratives about wolves. We're healing colonial destruction by re-Indigenizing human relationship to wildlife. Ecocentrism and coexistence are at the core of our mission; educating the public about our ecological interdependence with apex predators. We're healing human relationships to the natural world, by teaching that the planet and all living beings are sacred heirlooms we've inherited, not resources to be exploited. This sanctuary is not just about rescue—it's about radical love, revolutionary healing, and transformation for both humans and wolfdogs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do wolfdogs need sanctuaries like Black Moon?
Wolfdogs are often misunderstood, irresponsibly bred and sold, and people are often ill-prepared for or ignorant to their specialty breed needs, leading to them being abandoned, abused, or euthanized. Shelters are not equipped to handle their specific needs, nor legally permitted to rehome wolfdogs, which is why sanctuaries like ours are critical for their survival.
Can I visit your sanctuary?
Not yet. We are working on being setup, licensed and insured to have visitors by appointment only. Subscribe to our email list or Patreon for updates.
Can we adopt your wolfdogs?
We do not rehome our rescues, due to their breed specific specialty needs, their forever home is here with us at the sanctuary.
If you're interested in adopting, we HIGHLY suggest rescuing a husky at your local shelter, or through Husky Halfway House (they deliver all over the US). Huskies will share many of the characteristics that attract people to wolfdogs, without the breed specific risks and specialty care.
Can I surrender my wolfdog to Black Moon Wolfdog Sanctuary?
As a small sanctuary run by 2 people, we intake new rescues on a case-by-case basis, as our current resources will allow.
We suggest:
-Working with an animal behaviorist like Tony Nila, virtually or in person, first. To avoid rehoming.
-Contacting other wolfdog rescues that DO offer rehoming.
-Joining one of the many wolfdog rehoming groups on Facebook, to see if you can find a suitable home. There are lots of people interested in wolfdogs as pets, but please make sure they're in a legal state and are equipped for a wolfdog.
-If you have tried all of these, or your situation is uniquely urgent or a high-risk adoption emergency, contact Mētztli about sanctuary availability and eligibility.
How much wolf are the Black Moon wolfdogs?
As a Black and Indigenous founded and run organization, we do not subscribe to or promote blood quantum politics, for wolves, other animals, or people.
Blood quantum politics are faulty science, and a colonial construct- intrinsically genocidal and ecocidal.
Ours and Mētztli's philosophy is that you can't be part anything, you're a whole being. In our eyes ALL wolfdogs are 100% wolf and 100% dog. IF we are speaking to wolf content as pertains to their needs, we may say "higher or lower content" to help others understand. But we don't subscribe to Hitler's ideology of eugenics, or its false belief that phenotype determines behavior characteristics.
What's the best way to help?
Donations and grants help keep us afloat. Patreon subscriptions help pay our rent. And ALL the proceeds from the Revolutionary Mystic Hoodoo Botánica, readings with Mētztli, and our merch shop- benefit Black Moon Wolfdog Sanctuary.
Following us on social media and sharing us with your community also go a long way!
How are donations used?
100% of your donation goes directly to the care, housing, and medical needs of the wolfdogs.
